Distinguished Latin American Pathologists

Mario A Luna (1935-2008)

Dr Luna was not only one of the world leading experts in Head & Neck Pathology, but also an inspiring mentor and teacher for several generations of young pathologists worldwide. He was President of the Houston Society of Clinical Pathologists from 1992 to 1993, and President of the LAPF from 1992 to 1994. Among his accomplishments, he received the famous Harlan J. Spjut Award in 1998,  the Cultural medal to the Merit

conferred by The Mexican North American Cultural Institute of Jalisco, Mexico, and the title of Honorary Professor from the University  of Guadalajara, Mexico, and the Cruz Nacional de Sanidad from Caracas, Venezuela.

 

Every year, the LAPF presents the Mario A. Luna Award in honor of the beloved Dr Luna. The award recognizes excellence in Pathology by rewarding the best podium presentation or poster presented by a young Latin American Pathology resident or fellow at the LAPF Annual Reception at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) Annual Meeting.
